Matterhorn to Host the 5th Annual Ski Bum Prom to Benefit AbilityPLUS
Get out those bell bottom jeans – you know, the ones with the flag sewn on the rear end – as the 5th Annual Ski Bum Prom boards the Magic Bus and returns to the “Winter of Love.” The 60’s themed event will be hosted by the Matterhorn on Thursday, March 25th from 8:00 until everyone runs out of steam. Love-In attire is encouraged and may be rewarded if you happen to be chosen as this year’s Prom King or Queen.
This is an opportunity for all who love snow sports to come together for a great cause. All proceeds from the Prom go to support AbilityPLUS, a non-profit New England organization dedicated to helping disabled people of all abilities realize their dreams of inclusion through adaptive skiing and riding. AbilityPLUS supports the adaptive program at Stowe Mountain Resort’s Ski and Snowboard School by granting scholarships to local athletes, purchasing specialized equipment, and supporting adaptive training for Stowe’s instructors.
Mike Dolan, one of last year’s scholarship recipients, is a full time student at Johnson State College. Mike was an avid snowboarder until a swimming accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. We were really excited to see Mike recovering movement in both arms last year, and that made for some exciting trips down our trails.
“I was active snowboarding every winter since I was young. When I had my accident my life changed in all areas. Last February when we got all the snow, I felt down because I really, really wanted to play in the snow and my mom said let’s figure it out. She called Stowe Mountain Resort and they welcomed me! The first day in the snow my spirits were lifted and I felt really, really good and loved my experience. The instructors were professional and made my day fun and I was one with the mountain again. I gained confidence only because of the instructors, my being welcome at the mountain and my feeling that I can still snowboard!!”
This year AbilityPLUS awarded seven scholarships of $1000 each, and Mike is back skiing with us along with six other locals. Jordan Carroll, who suffered a spinal cord injury snowboarding on Mt. Mansfield four years ago, got his own monoski with the help of the Kelli Brush Foundation. His scholarship allows him to rip it up on his new ski with a season’s pass and still get some coaching from his instructors.
Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. Or grab a date and one of the special prom packages for $30 ($40 at the door) that admits two and includes flowers for your hair, a prom photo, and 10 raffle tickets. Raffle tickets are available for $1 each or 15 for $10, and you don’t have to be present to win one of the great prizes. Prom tickets and/or raffle tickets can be purchased at the UPS Store on South Main Street in Stowe or at the Ski & Snowboard School desk at Spruce Camp at Stowe Mountain Resort.
